My experience with cycling is, “I’ve been fit and I’ve been fat, and fit is better!” For better or for worse, I have had to start over riding a bicycle quite a few times. Riding a bike when fit is easy. You can go anywhere you want, everything works well, the handling skills are honed and you can take for granted how much effort it takes to be a human-powered vehicle. This is not the case when learning to ride a bike as an adult and certainly not when starting to ride after a long layoff.

We share the road with bigger, faster vehicles driven by people who may or may not pay attention. I ask people what their biggest fear is while riding on the road and by far the answer is “being struck from behind.” It is a harsh reality that when we are struck from behind we are powerless and “naked.” The bigger reality, however, is that we have more likelihood to hit something ahead of us than being struck from behind.

“What can I do to navigate better on my bike?” The first thing to think about is what I call “Taking the Long View.” This applies to riding alone, in a group, on a straight road or in a curve. I learned from the long time pros that they looked far ahead to make sure that nothing “sneaked up” on them. They also developed a constant “Plan B” to navigate out of a problem if it happened.

The all-time favorite Tour de France winner, the American Lance Armstrong has announced his comeback to the professional cycling world. Armstrongs new goal is to pursue a new Tour de France victory and he has already begun talking to the Astana team. Additionally, Armstrong is willing to go through several drug tests to better his performance. The cyclist is aware he will be supporting his team mate, the Spaniard Alberto Contador at the next Tour de France.
